Location: The Teardrop

In their late twenties to early thirties, Thomas had a late introduction to cruising, although had access to the internet in the form of dial-up. They would peruse chat rooms and find mentions of specific locations around Melbz, but also knew that there was activity occurring around certain beaches at dusk, even in the heterosexual world.

In the mid-1990s in Perth, Thomas discovered beach cruising when they happened upon a nude beach far from the car park along the beach. They observed that something was happening and that straight people were also participating in their own version of cruising around dusk, where things were happening in the bushes. From there, they found saunas such as Club 80 or Wet. Or they would stop into the Peel Hotel early hours of the morning after working night shift, which became their outlet for exploration, especially during their struggles with their queer identity.

At the age of 18, Thomas visited Steam Works sauna, where they put on a speedo to walk around and had a good time, but also felt guilt and shame afterwards.

Thomas still does not believe they have mastered the language of cruising, but enjoys it when it works well. They recognise the dangers associated with cruising but feel that the potential for fun outweighs the danger. Thomas is frustrated with the acceptance of straight people and appreciates the isolation and beauty of The Teardrop, despite recognising that there is still foot traffic. Thomas has worked on their body acceptance and has become a nudist.
